BUILDING THE FUTURE (2019-2020)

INSTALLATION, PERFORMANCE

Collage of images showing a man during an art performance titled 'Building the future; the leftovers of my childhood' at 'The Attic' in Brussels. The images depict the man lying on the floor, working with plaster and other materials, lifting abstract sculptures, and sitting shirtless reading a book among debris, with audience members watching.
A man sits at a desk in a classroom or conference room, reading a paper. There are three women seated facing him, one with her back to the camera and two with side profiles. A projection on the white wall shows an image of a mountain with text that reads 'Building the future is performing the present,' along with some other words and graphics. The desk has a white first aid or medical box with a black cross on it, and a cord runs from it. To the right of the desk, a coat is hung on a stand. The caption below states that it is a 20-minute performance called 'Building the future is performing the present,' in Brussels, 2019.
A performer creates an art piece involving stacking and balancing bags of flour on the floor inside a modern, industrial-style room with large windows showing a cityscape. Several people are seated, watching the performance, which is part of an art talk at Luca School of Arts in Brussels.

This twenty-minute triptych performance was conceived following the writing of a thesis on the issues of retinal frustration in Marcel Duchamp's work. During these performances, I offered a sensitive reinterpretation of my academic journey and shared survival strategies for contemporary art.
